‘Dido and Aeneas’

The 39th Opera Season of the Teatre Principal presents Dido and Aeneas, considered one of the greatest works of baroque music. With music by Henry Purcell and libretto in English by the poet Nahum Tate, it tells the love story between the queen of Carthage, Dido, and Aeneas, hero of Troy.

The world premiere of this opera took place at the Josias Priest girls’ school in London in the summer of 1688 (some authors point to December 1989), although its commercial premiere did not come until 1700, also in the British capital. In Spain it did not premiere until 1956 at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.

The staging that we will be able to see in Palma will be completed with the baroque piece Ode to Saint Cecilia, also by Purcell. Guest co-production in co-production with the Ravenna Festival of Italy.

With stage direction and design by Pier Luigi Pizzi and musical direction by Andrés Salado, it features Irene Mas (soprano), Begoña Gómez and Susana Cordón (contraltos), Christian Borrelli (countertenor), Tomeu Bibilioni (baritone), Gabriel Mas and Gabriel Alonso (bass baritones), Catina Bibiloni, Natalia Salom, Konstantin Derri, Francisco Fernández-Rueda, Cor del Teatre Principal (directed by Francesc Bonnin), Orquestra Simfònica Illes Balears and guest soloists. Language: English with Catalan and Spanish subtitles.
