'Christmas Oratorio BWV 248', by JS Bach

The third seasonal concert of the Fundació Studium Aureum is dedicated to two cantatas from Weihnachts-oratorium BWV 248 (Christmas Oratorio), by Johann Sebastian Bach. It is directed by Carles Ponseti and will be interpreted with period instruments.

Weihnachts-oratorium BWV 248 is a sacred work written by Johann Sebastian Bach for Christmas 1734, although it was not reinterpreted until December 17, 1857. The author of the text is unknown, it is only known that intervened the German poet and librettist known by the pseudonym of Picander or Picandro.

The work lasts almost three hours, and in this concert they perform Cantata No. 4 and Cantata No. 5, both for soloists, choir and orchestra. Half an hour before, the composer Mercè Pons will offer an introductory talk about the work.
