The 32th Opera and Ballet Season of the Principal Teatre de Palma begins with this production of the Teatro de la Maestranza de Sevilla of The weddings of Figaro, opera buffa with music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Italian libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte. A monumental production premiered in 1999 and directed by José Luis Castro, which captures his architectural conception of the scenic space and his aesthetics of Renaissance painting.
Other key contributions are the costumes of Franca Squarciapino (winner of an Oscar for Cyrano de Bergerac) and stage design of Ezio Frigerio, with 60 years of career and 250 scenographies behind him. A legendary couple from the European scene to whom the Teatre Principal pays homage this season. It also highlights the choreography of Seville dancer Cristina Hoyos.
The musical direction is by Yi-Chen Li, who will lead the Orquestra Simfònica Illes Balears, also taking part is the Cor del Teatre Principal in Palma, directed by Pere Víctor Rado.
Based on the excellent text of Da Ponte - in which political and social denunciation is mixed with class and gender struggle - Mozart forms a kaleidoscopic characterization game of the figures while reflecting, through music , their multiple moods.
