Legend has it that Maria Calderon, 'La Calderona', met King Felipe IV one day performing at the Corral de la Cruz in Madrid and since then became his lover. Valencian playwright Chema Cardenas was inspired by this seventeenth century actress to write La Puta enamorada (The whore in love), which he himself interpreted on its premiere in 1999.
Now, the producer Salvador Collado and the Teatro Calderón de Valladolid stage it once again with a production directed by Jesus Castejón and interpreted by Eva Marciel, Jesus Aguado and Javier Collado.
The play starts with La Calderona appearing before the painter Diego Velázquez, whom Felipe IV commissioned a portrait of his beloved.
