BIENNAL B – Alberto Baraya. Llatina i Mestral

Alberto Baraya unveils “Llatina i Mestral”, a live art performance at sea where he paints directly onto a traditional sailing sail (llatina), turning it into a moving canvas powered by the mistral wind. Mallorca becomes both backdrop and protagonist of the artwork.

Following his earlier project “Vento”, Baraya explores the dialogue between craftsmanship and nature, using the iconic Mediterranean sail and the island’s meteorology. As the boat sails, paint evolves; upon docking, the sail reveals a painted narrative born in motion and transformed by elements.

On display at the Maritime Museum, the exhibition features the painted sail and a film documenting the performance: Baraya painting on a seven-meter sail in open sea.

“Llatina i Mestral” embodies Biennal B’s goal—driven by Es Baluard Museu and the Consell de Mallorca—to highlight Mallorca’s cultural landscape through cross-disciplinary artistic practices grounded in tradition, craft, and creative collaboration.
