'Chillida, graphic works'

The Gallery Altair in Palma hosts this exhibition of graphic work of sculptor Eduardo Chillida (San Sebastian, 1924-2002), one of the most renowned Spanish artists in continuation of the tradition of Julio González and Pablo Picasso.

His first plaster sculptures were figurative, inspired by the ancient Greek sculpture, but gradually he began to change towards more abstract forms and in 1951 began his work in iron. Later he introduced other materials such as wood, concrete, steel, stone and alabaster in his works.

Throughout his career he received numerous awards including the Prize for Sculpture at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh (1964) Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts (1981), Europäischer Premium der Künste (1983), Grand Prix des Arts et Letres Paris (1984), Premio Principe de Asturias (1984) Japanese Imperial Prize (1991), among others.

The economic crisis ended up in 2011 closing the Chillida Leku museum in Hernani, although at present it is possible to visit by appointment.
