The Mallorca Chamber Orchestra presents one of the most intense and moving programs in the classical repertoire: Death and the Maiden, featuring the prestigious Quiroga Quartet, winner of the 2018 National Music Award.
The concert opens with two true gems of the chamber music repertoire. First, Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet in D minor, Op. 42, a work that reflects the formal perfection and brightness of Viennese classicism. Brief, elegant, and full of grace, it combines structural rigor with lyrical expression of great subtlety.
This is followed by the String Quartet No. 1 in D minor by Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga, known as the “Spanish Mozart.” Despite his youth, Arriaga composed music of remarkable maturity, anticipating European Romantic sensibility and standing out for its dramatic intensity and emotional refinement.
In the second half, the Quiroga Quartet joins the Mallorca Chamber Orchestra to perform Franz Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14 in D minor, D. 810, Death and the Maiden, in the version for string orchestra arranged by Gustav Mahler.
This Romantic masterpiece contrasts the struggle for life with the serenity of death, exploring some of the deepest human emotions. Mahler’s adaptation amplifies the expressive power of the original quartet, transforming the score into an intense, intimate, and overwhelming sonic experience, regarded as one of the pinnacles of the Romantic repertoire.
