Exhibition of Maritime Signals of the Portopí lighthouse

The Portopí Lighthouse, declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1983, is a historical lighthouse that is already cited in a document dated September 12, 1300 as part of the codicil included in the will of King Jaime II of Mallorca, which is preserved in the National Library of Paris.

The primitive lighthouse was not in the current place, but on the hill occupied today by the Fort of San Carlos, built in 1612. But the crystals of the lighthouse's lantern were broken when the cannons were fired, so it had to be moved to where it is currently located, on the Tower of Signals.

The Portopí lighthouse is the second oldest in Spain and one of the oldest working lighthouses in the world. In 1807 a rotating reverb optic was installed, with only four Spanish lighthouses that used this technology at that time. In 1893, olive oil as fuel was replaced by Scottish paraffin, in 1918 it was electrified and in 1927 its optics were replaced again, placing in its place another cathodic (reverb) being currently the only Spanish lighthouse that illuminates with a optics of these characteristics.

Inside there is a permanent exhibition of maritime signs that brings together one of the best collections currently existing in Europe, of material used in maritime lighting. On August 24, 1972 its light was turned off, considering it unnecessary given the growth of the port and the existence of a complete network of beacons that facilitated the entrance to it. But on April 1, 1977 it was decided to turn it on again taking into account the historical importance of this signal.
