Opera in three acts with music by Engelbert Humperdinck and libretto by Adelheine Wette (sister of German composer), based on the famous homonymous story by the Brothers Grimm.
Hansel and Gretel were children of a poor woodcutter. They were a family so poor that one night the stepmother convinces the father to abandon the children in the forest, as they no longer had the money to feed them. Hansel overheard this, so he left his home to find stones, which marked a road the next day when they went to the forest.
