Classically trained pianist Joachim Kühn (Leipzig, 1944) is one of the most important musicians in the forefront of European jazz. His virtuosity led him to search for new forms of expression and in 1964, influenced by John Coltrane, led a trio that was the first to free jazz in East Germany.
In the seventies he traveled around the world with the group of Jean-Luc Ponty and in the eighties he moved to Paris, where he starts one of the most interesting stages of his career alongside Daniel Humair and Jean-François Jenny-Clark.
His last albums keep showing a Joachim Kühn constantly searching within his stylistic consistency. The latest Chalaba (2011), recorded with the two musicians who accompany him on this show of Mallorca Jazz Sa Pobla: Majid Bekkas (lute, guembri and vocals) and Ramon Lopez (drums, table, cajón and percussion).
