His tenor has become the hallmark of Kirk Whalum. In Memphis, Tennessee, he lwft himself impregnate with the roots of gospel and Houston was discovered by jazz pianist Bob James, who accompanied him on a successful tour. Kirk and Bob received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration on the album Joined at the Hip.

In Los Angeles, Kirk became one of the most in demand session musicians by artists such as Barbara Streisand, Al Jarreau, Quincy Jones and Whitney Houston, with whom he collaborated playing the saxophone on the smash hit I Will Always Love You. In 2011 he won his first Grammy for Best Gospel Song for It's What I do.

He is now touring Europe with his latest work The Gospel According to Jazz ( 2015), stopping on the island within the Mallorca Smooth Jazz Festival.
