Una nueva Big Band nace en la isla, la Mallorca Jazz Orquestra, formada por diecinueve músicos mallorquines y algunos procedentes de Cataluña. Debuta en Cala Rajada bajo la dirección de Sergi Vergés, trombonista y director de la Big Band del Liceu de Barcelona.
El trompetista americano Matthew Simon, afincado en Barcelona y profesor del Liceo desde 1982 actuará como figura invitada. Simon ha compartido escenario con figuras míticas como Miles Davis, Buena Vista Social Club, Cecilia Cruz, Tito Puente, Tete Montoliu ,Jerry Lewis o Bebo Valdés.
Esta orquesta de nuevo cuño presentará un concierto de gran formato con un repertorio integrado por grandes clásicos del jazz con arreglos originales de Mel Lewis, Thad Jones, Billy Strayhorny, Toshiko Akiyoshi, entre otros.
