Es Baluard Museu d'Art Contemporani de Palma presents Maria Lai. La escritura tejida, the first retrospective exhibition in Spain of the Italian artist Maria Lai (Ulassai, 1919 – Cardedu, 2013) that reconstructs the career of one of the most important art figures of the second half of the 20th century in Europe.
The project La escritura tejida (woven writing), curated by Imma Prieto and Maria Alicata, is based on three main ideas: writing (textual and visual), memory and community, and the link established between writing and sewing.
Writing and sewing as intimate gestures that reveal ideas and create new universes on the blank page or canvas.
Through paintings, sculptures, looms, sewn fabrics, books, maps, actions in the public space, the artist displayed a whole universe and her own language that connects intimately with a Mediterranean landscape that responds to specific codes and frequencies: the heart of Sardinia, a village in Ogliastra, located between stone mountains and the sea.
