Open day

Open day at Monestir de Miramar on the ocassion of the  Balearic Islands Day. Founded in 1276 by Ramon Llull as a monastery and school of oriental languages, where the franciscans learned Arabic to go and evangelize North Africa. Later it passed to different monastic orders, and in 1487 marked a milestone in the history of Mallorca when it installed the first printing press on the island, only 25 years after Gutenberg presented his revolutionary invention.

After a period of decline in 1872 it was purchased by archduke Luis Salvador of Austria, the first of the many properties he acquired in the Sierra de Tramuntana. He carried out an important restoration project that brought back its splendor. Here he received his distinguished visitors, like the French painter and writer Gaston Vuillier, prehistorians Bartoli and Cartailhac, or the poets Rubén Darío and Jacinto Verdaguer.

At present, Miramar has become a museum dedicated to the two worlds lived by Ramon Llull and the Archduke. The interior of the house conserves the old floor of the monastery, the monks' kitchen, a model and the reproduction of the cabin of his sailboat Nixe II (with furniture, books, navigation instruments, etc..), The magnificent cenotaph of Wratislao Vivorny by Italian sculptor Antonio Tantardini (1829-1879) and, among other things, a virgin in Carrara marble which is preserved in the chapel and was a gift from his cousin the Empress Sissi.

On the outside stand out an old mill, the Byzantine garden, the cloister that Luis Salvador had restored from the recovery of some Gothic arches from the convent of Santa Margalida of Palma, and several viewpoints such as S'Arxiduc, Sa Ferradura, viewpoint of des Llac and Jardí de la Torre del Moro, among others. From all of them spectacular panoramic views can be contemplated.
