Symphony No.3 of Gustav Mahleris the work chosen for this first concert of the 2016-2017 subscription season of the Orquestra Simfònica IllesBalears. Directed by its head-conductor Pablo Mielgo it also features mezzo-soprano Maria Jose Montiel, the Coral Universitat de les Illes Balears, Academia Simfònica and the child coral Onzequinze de Joventuts Musicals de Palma.
The Symphony No.3 in D minor, composed by Gustav Mahler between 1895and 1896, was released in1902. This is a major work consisting of six movements, one of which requires a chorus of children, a women's chorus and a contralto. The fourth movement, O Mensch!, contains the lyrics of some fragments of Thus Spoke Zarathustra by Friedrich Nietzsche.
This symphony was originally subtitled Eine Sommermorgentraum (A dream of a summer morning).
