The first event scheduled in Mallorca within the week in which the International Jazz Day is celebrated this concert by students and teachers of jazz of the Conservatori Superior de Música de les Illes Balears. In it they will present la cátedra de jazz of recent creation.
The International Jazz Day, celebrated on April 30, is an initiative of UNESCO and the great pianist Herbie Hancock. This year the theme chosen is Against Intolerance, in homage to the singer Billie Holiday (1915-1959), the most admired female voice in jazz. April 7 was the centenary of her birth.
Because of this event some of the activities of the week revolve around the figure of Lady Day, as she was called. In addition, the Conservatory and UNESCO Baleares will record a CD with songs of the diva interpreted by the voices of Sheela Gathright, Dunia Hédreville, Christa Elmer and Abigail Sardon. They will be accompanied by the Blue House Project group led by Manel Camp and composed of students and teachers of the Conservatory. This CD opens with Strange Fruit, one of the songs in which the atrocities of racism in America at the time were reflected.
