Time:
All day, main events from morning to evening
Event description:
Every January 17, Pollença fills with smoke, music, and excitement for one of Mallorca’s most vibrant folk festivals: the Pujada al Pi (Subida al Pino). Half religious ritual, half popular challenge, this tradition combines faith, strength, humor, and a touch of collective madness.
Origins and symbolism:
The celebration is part of the Sant Antoni festivals, dedicated to Saint Anthony Abad, the patron saint of animals. The tradition involves transporting a monumental pine tree from the forest to the heart of the village, coating it with soap, and attempting to climb to the top. It is an act that celebrates strength, cooperation, and the festive spirit of the community.
Festival stages:
Night of Fire (January 16): Bonfires and correfocs parade through the streets, accompanied by music, sparks, and celebration.
Blessing of animals and tree transport (January 17): Villagers bring their animals for blessing. A 20–24 meter pine is then felled and transported to the village by volunteers amid laughter, music, and cheers.
The climb: Young and not-so-young attempt to scale the soaped tree, helping each other, until they reach the symbolic prize at the top.
A celebration of community:
More than a physical challenge, the Pujada al Pi represents the collective identity of Pollença. Each generation contributes strength, ingenuity, and enthusiasm, reaffirming the pride of keeping the tradition alive.
Tips for visitors:
Arrive early: the streets fill hours in advance.
Dress warmly: January nights in Mallorca can be cold.
Follow safety instructions and respect the roped-off areas.
Experience the whole festival week with concerts, parades, and local food.
More than a climb:
The magic of the Pujada al Pi lies in shared laughter, the smoke of the bonfires, the drums and bells, and the collective suspense as someone reaches the top. Under the firelight and the aroma of grilled sardines, Pollença shows its bravest, happiest, and most deeply rooted spirit.
Recommendation:
If you are in Mallorca on January 17, don’t miss the Pujada al Pi. It’s not just a festival – it’s an experience you feel in your heart.
