The Francesc Valls Choir, directed by Pere Lluís Biosca and linked to the Cathedral of Barcelona, closes the VIII Setmana de Música Antiga Colònia de Sant Pere (SMA2019).
The concert revolves around the musical form of the motete, represented in this case by Catholic Tomás Luis de Victoria and Lutheran Johann Sebastian Bach.
The motete (from the French motet, and this mot, which means word, mote) is a polyphonic composition created in the thirteenth century to be sung in churches, with generally biblical themes. Until the seventeenth century, it was one of the most important musical forms of polyphonic music.
The VIII Setmana de Música Antiga (Antiga Music Week) is celebrated from July 18 to 27 and is organized by the Music Association of the Colònia de Sant Pere.
