'El combat del segle'

Costa Rican Denise Duncan is the author and director of El combat del segle, a play that relives the confrontation between Jack Johnson and Jim Jeffries in a duel over racism. The show has the musical direction of Marco Mezquida.

At the beginning of the 20th century an American boxer arrived in Barcelona. His name is Jack Johnson and he was the first African American to be proclaimed world heavyweight champion. He faced Jim Jeffries in the so-called Combat of the Century and, against all odds, won it.

Johnson had to pay a high price for his triumph: an unfair sentence that caused him to leave his native country. And although he finds different airs in Barcelona, Jack Johnson will be haunted by the ghosts of his past who, led by three cabaret women, will make him review his history and the memory of his rival, Jim Jeffries.

This production of the Grec 2020 Festival de Barcelona, Sala Beckett, Centro Dramático Nacional and Teatre Principal de Palma is performed by Queralt Albinyana, Alex Brendemühl, Armando Buika, Andrea Ros and Yolanda Sikara. Catalan language.
