At the initiative of the German artist Elisabeth Masé, in a performance workshop in Benin, men and women from West Africa embroidered a circular, dense, red cotton coat/mantle in 2018. Weaving became a social painting.
This initiative sought to address what the participants felt was worth protecting. Using the embroidered cape, loaded with protective thoughts and personal stories, the Tchekpo dance company developed the dance piece that it now presents in the new edition of Palma Dansa.
Der Mantel/The Cloak creates bridges between different cultures, combining contemporary dance with traditional African dance, and voodoo percussion with electronic sound.
The Palma Dansa 2022 festival is organized by the Department of Culture of the Palma City Council and is held from April 29 to May 8 in different areas of the city.
